So my new hydrolycus tatauaia came down with what appears to be velvet. The tank mates are a Juruense catfish, A. Falcirostris, Nandus, Midnight Catfish and Spotted Raphael.

I remember reading somewhere that vampire tetras cannot handle any kind of treatments and that salt and warm water are the only things that help. My boss recommended copper sulfate, but is that too strong for the other fish?

no but in small quantities <<COPPE sulfate<<
>>>>>sea salt>>and the salt would be a simpler option but u should use a sprinkle directly into tha aqarium which eat away at the sickniss over time

I had Ick a few years back when I had 3-4 Tats together.
4 things I did...

1, Temp 84* or higher
2, water change then Add Aquarium Salt
3, made sure I had great aeration
4, did not feed for 1 week (as long as they had a good meal with in the 2 weeks)

They either got it from feeders or most likely if they were shipped. If you do feed feeders, it's best from this point on to quarantine feeders 1 week min before feeding.
I used Methylene Blue with no problems.

I would avoid Meds and if I'm not mistaken, CopperSafe kills your Beneficial Bacteria.
Try the salt method to speed up the life cycle of Ick (so it might get a lil worst b4 it starts getting better)
G/L :D

I'm not sure if kletted cooper kills bio colonies or not, I've used Mardels cooper safe before as a quick cure for ick with Hydro Scomb. I used half the recommended dosage per gal. It worked very quickly, the fish is still alive and it's been a year since. However I did use a quarantine tank for the procedure, the community tank was treated with half dosages of aquarium salt and a large water change as a precaution.

Right now I do not have a QT tank set up. I do not even have any room to set up a large enough QT tank. I could setup a 10 gallon QT but having ick/velvet and being in a newly setup 10 gallon could cause even more problems.

I am raising the temperature and using salt. I have 40 tsp now. The tank is a 40br. I am going to double that today and bump the temperature up from 84 to 86.

10% waterchanges every day, and 2lbs of salt per 100 gallons. will clear up pretty fast....

One of mine came down with ick/ velvet too. I hope they will make it.

I am really having trouble deciding if it's ick or velvet. It spread like velvet, but it's large like ick.

He is acting normal though and I am just trying to get this out of my tank ASAP. I did a 10% water change tonight and doubled the salt to 2 tsp per gallon since that is the measurement method I already started using. Next time though I will do the 1lb/50 gallon method though.

Normally I try to avoid getting fish from this store since the tanks are often overcrowded, tiny, the employees don't remove dead fish and they only offer a 2 day guarantee (mine should already be up now), but in this case this was my only choice.

Yea has yours eaten at all? I haven't even thrown in food, and now the ick problem. I just haven't seen tats at other stores so I had to buy them, and I wasn't sure when I would see them in a LFS around here again.

Mine has been hungry. I only have small rosys and when I do throw them in they all tend to hide right infront of the nandus nandus. So all the rosys are eaten before he even sees them. He is looking thin and he gets into strike stance when he thinks he sees food or when he turns around and sees a new fish.

I might pick up a goldfish for him today to eat since I think the other fish are not big enough for goldfish yet. It sucks that all the rosys are coming in so small!
