Mine has been hungry. I only have small rosys and when I do throw them in they all tend to hide right infront of the nandus nandus. So all the rosys are eaten before he even sees them. He is looking thin and he gets into strike stance when he thinks he sees food or when he turns around and sees a new fish.

I might pick up a goldfish for him today to eat since I think the other fish are not big enough for goldfish yet. It sucks that all the rosys are coming in so small!

Yea I wanna go and buy rosies, but with both of them having ick I kinda want to get rid of that before I feed them feeders or anything. I might go pick some up today though.

I am really having trouble deciding if it's ick or velvet. It spread like velvet, but it's large like ick.

He is acting normal though and I am just trying to get this out of my tank ASAP. I did a 10% water change tonight and doubled the salt to 2 tsp per gallon since that is the measurement method I already started using. Next time though I will do the 1lb/50 gallon method though.

Normally I try to avoid getting fish from this store since the tanks are often overcrowded, tiny, the employees don't remove dead fish and they only offer a 2 day guarantee (mine should already be up now), but in this case this was my only choice.

I don't know how big is your tank. When I treat fish diseases esp ich.
I can throw in a whole 1kg of aquarium salt into a 3 by 1.5 by 1.5 ft tank and bump up temp to over 30 degree.

If the spots appear like really fine, and can only be observed at an angle, then it is velvet.

Yea has yours eaten at all? I haven't even thrown in food, and now the ick problem. I just haven't seen tats at other stores so I had to buy them, and I wasn't sure when I would see them in a LFS around here again.

Ich and Velvet are results of combinations of high nitrate levels, sudden temp or conditions change.

If I am u, I will do a proper water change, apply salt and heater and leave the tank as it is without any changes. No feeding during this period.

I am v sure, they will recover.

I doubt that the fish got sick from our tank conditions.

It is very important that LFS take good care of fish once they get them in. They must take the fish out of the bags ASAP, do regular water changes, feed healthy foods etc. A lot of LFS assume that short term bad conditions won't harm a fish so they feed them little and don't keep the water really clean. In reality though right after the fish was caught from the wild, moved from half a dozen tanks and shipped twice the fish needs the best possible conditions since it is very weak.

I think mine already had signs of ick at the store. I have had fish with spots like that before that wasn't anything but just texture of the fish. Being only by the fins at the LFS I didn't think much of it. Also, it looked healthy. But once I got home the spots spread a little and the next day it had full blown ick.

I'd say that high nitrate levels takes a toll on the fish long term. I wouldn't say that within a few days in high nitrate water the fish gets sick. Ammonia and nitrite are much more likely to cause illness.

But I am hoping that he recovers. I am actually pretty worried about him jumping out of the tank. The glass lid in the back is open a bit due to one of the filters. In my experience hungry fish are much more likely to jump.

I absolutely agree with you that it isn't our aquariums. If I remeber correctly the tanks which the tats were in had dead feeder goldfish floating along the top, which should have been scooped out. They were in a 55 with 8 brackish snook and a croaker. That tank was way too overcrowded. The LFS should've at least had a 75 set aside for the trio of tats. The LFS is definitely where they got ick.

The ick is starting to go away. It is looking more like bad ick instead of velvet on steroids.

Also, did you notice that rockwork background that was 3-4" wide?

Yea I know! The only reason I shop at this LFS is because they always have exotics. Is there any other LFS in Buffalo that sell exotics??

At the fish place we occasionally get in exotics. I have been bugging my boss to get in some tats. But last week we got a huge saltwater shipment (with exotic saltwater fish) so we didn't really order anything besides staple fresh.

I am hoping if they are still available he will get some tats this week. We also had two ATF as well as a GATF, brycon dentex, alligator gars, reticulated knifefish, hungarian sturgeon, different FW pipefish, double-trunk elephant nose, a baby FW barracuda and baby raph (1 and 2"), jaya-irain datnoid and electric catfish in the past two months. Also when we get in scombs and raphs, they are normally 20 dollars, instead of 35 and are a little larger :headbang2

Unfortunately the fish place does not attract many exotic fish keepers. Ever since I started working there I was shocked by the lack of sales on our exotic fish. Even the people that buy them, just buy them because they are loaded and the fish is cool looking. All of our knowledgeable customers want discus, apistos and salt :yuck:.

If you want exotics come in and ask if you can speak to the manager and request some. The Fish Place, Markheim and Pets Plus all have the same selections of fish.

Also, Rainbow Tropical Fish on NF BLVD tries to get exotic fish. They have a small selection though. He orders from a different wholesaler so he has different fish he can get. Last time I was there he had a brackish stonefish. I also had him order brackish moray eels and halfbeaks before they showed up in other stores.

We had a 6" ATF for 100. It was in a 55 and died from rubbing his nose on the side panel all day. The other one was 8-9" and went for 170. The only reason we sold the last GATF was because it was aired on river monsters earlier that week. The GATF was there for a few months before that and nobody was interested. I don't think we are going to get any more GATF for a while, but when we get raphs I will let you know. For some reason the one wholesaler sends both raphs and scombs so sometimes we get tanks with both.

When we get raphs or if we get GATF I will make sure to PM you. If you ever decide just to stop by and see whats there, Friday or Saturday is the best time. We get all of our fish Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
