Hi keepers. How are you?

I already have a tat (9 inches)and I want to purchase a scomb of 8 inches. Would this combo work?

Thank you

D.

I have 3 scombs with 2 armatus that are 1" bigger and all that happens is a little bit of chasing but no biting yet. This won't last long though as the armatus get bigger.

it it also in the 90 gallon tank? Tats and scombs aren't as aggressive as the armatus so it wouldn't be such a huge risk. they are also have simalar growth rates I believe? I would give it a go. Make sure the tank isn't overstocked. At watch for minor aggression. i have seen people keeping scomb groups together or tat groups together with little to no problem.

Correct me if i'm wrong but payaras (especially armatus) go for the eyes when they grow bigger as of territorial issues.

But those are small and your bottom tat looks as though it had an eye injury. I am talking when they get over 12". My armatus started going for the eyes after 12". The last one I had was 18". I am currently growing out 2 smaller ones but they are in a big tank so we will see how it works again. I believe I read a thread on here or somewhere else that a tat was attacking another tat in the tank. Here is another thread about a tat problem.

Doesn't hurt to try the 2 but I wouldn't do it in a small tank.

haha my brotha payarakeeper. I've seen his stocklist in two occasions. i think he sold that aggressive tat. He kept new tats in several occasisions I think. or was it he seperated the armatus into a smaller tank and grew it out. He did manage to keep that armatus with a school of 3 tats of simalar sizes for quite some time. He did eventually sell the tats for business. When the armatus grew he began to take over the tank. It did like to boss the tats around but nothing serious in injuries. The armatus eventually did cause some havok in the tank. The tats were around 10-12 or so inches. They got along fine. Of course they were in a 300 gallon with space. You've got to ask payarakeeper to be 100% clear.

Both of my fish were discount bin fish ($40 for the tat, $65 for the scomb) that were written off as unsalvageable. They were both rough and the tat had permenant internal clouding of the left eye. They were both about 8" when I sold them.

As for over 12", you'd have to show me a scomb or tat that is unquestionably over 12" for me to even talk about it. I've never seen one and I'm no spring chicken. Even in the wild, scombs don't get over 12" and tats don't get over 18". I've never seen one in captivity that even got to those sizes.

Hi Blk, you are right! Sorry I should try a search at first. I was reading that scombs and tats aren't agressive as armatus...I love armatus but I don't have enough size for a beast like this.

Hi Aw, do you have this combo for a long time?

Hi Lix, I don have 90 gallon tank...I have a 140 gallon, 6x2ft. My intentions are: two or three (if possible) payaras, a pack of aces, a pack of boulengerella and my tapajos pike. I would love to have a payara trio, but I'm concerned about eyes injuries.

Hi Chicx. I love your scomb! Beautiful fish!!!! I'm happy to see that this combo works for you! Which is the tank size?

Thank you guys...I 'll try to take a picture of my tat tomorrow to ilustrate one of the inhabitants.

i would try 3 tats or 3 scombs in the tank. I have seen this combo work when they were somewhere at a foot long. Just keep them well fed. The other tankmates might be too much for the payaras when they grow bigger. You planning to upgrade?

Me personalily I would do a pack of scombs or tats but I wouldn't risk it on armatus.
