Tatauaia and scomberoides together. Would this combo work?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both of my fish were discount bin fish ($40 for the tat, $65 for the scomb) that were written off as unsalvageable. They were both rough and the tat had permenant internal clouding of the left eye. They were both about 8" when I sold them.

As for over 12", you'd have to show me a scomb or tat that is unquestionably over 12" for me to even talk about it. I've never seen one and I'm no spring chicken. Even in the wild, scombs don't get over 12" and tats don't get over 18". I've never seen one in captivity that even got to those sizes.

Chicx, you don't think tats can get over 12" in a aquarium? Idk how big it is(supposedly 16+ inches) but here's one of the bigger ones I've found on mfk.

To me, a tat of the size of that one is akin to a 12" scomb or a 3' GATF. It IS possible, but rare and a very special accomplishment. The tat is admittedly more likely to be able to reach that size than scombs as they were described as having a maximum adult size of 18", but I'd still consider it exceptionally rare even in the wild. They might exist, but throwing those sizes around like they're something that everyone will be able to get their fish to accomplish is foolish and pretentious IMO.

Edit- that IS probably the biggest tat I've ever seen.

Thank you Rob.

That is a very bad news to me.

To be honest I already bought 3 cudas and maculatas (we can't find these fishes in LFS here so I purchased from fishers in North part of the country, they are waiting for the shipping in next week)...so now I really have to give a shot, but I will take your advices as the advices of lix seriously. If the things don't work well I will not insist....

I'm feel like a little idiot right now. Because I was planning this fauna based in fish profiles and everything I read says that this could be good tankmates and good fishes for a 6ft tank!

:-(

Well you already got them, why not give it a try? While we are agreed that they're not the best combo for that size of a tank, there's certainly been odder combos to work out fine.

Let us know how it goes.

I can't wait to see this entire setup! I don't know much of the maculatas behaviors, but I've had red and yellowtail cuda's and they weren't skittish at all. Just keep a positive attitude and your groups might actually work out fine.

I hope that God listen your words!

Oh ok just wanted your opinion...I had a pic on my cpu of one bigger than that one but lost it when I reformatted.
