I had most of mine drawn specificaly ((man I cant spell :( )for me. These are the tattoos your more likly to enjoy for life. Food for thought

As for what to get, only you can answer that. I usually start with an idea and google the heck out of anything and everything that may be related. By the time I hit the shop I have a few pictures, generally sketches, from which I can point to certain points I like. I also show up with a color/shading scheme of what I like and don't like then let the artist do his thing. One huge mistake people make is not planning for future work, take time and think about how your piece will fit on the chosen body part and what you may get in the future.

As most have said pick an area and idea then wait a year and see if you still like it...

Then if you do, find an artist that specializes in that area.. And don't just find the cheapest artist... Most good artist have waiting lists... So if you have to wait, then wait...

Now as for ideas... Seen as tattoos are a very personal affair, i would find a design that either 1) has meaning to you or 2) something you can see yourself liking when your 80 years old...

Having worked in a tattoo parlor for almost 3 years helping out i've seen way too many people regret their tattoos after short periods of time... Even seen a few with full back pieces come in and ask for a cover up piece...

Which is not only a long, painful experience, but an expensive one at that...

I'd get some symbol that has some important meaning to you, or maybe a short phrase.
Whatever you get, make sure it means something haha, a friend of mine got a dragon on his arm just because he wanted a tat and its one of the dumbest looking thins ive seen. on the other end, another friend of mine got a celtic cross shield thing with a shamrock and it looks awesome.
just examples.

I actually have the opposite strategy for tattoos... I generally pick something that means nothing to me, just a concept of an image that I like and let the artist go nuts. I have about 50% of my body tattooed (full sleeves, chest, hips, legs...). I do have mom and dad tattoos though. ;)

One very important thing i forgot to mention... Never use flash art (art found on a tattoo parlour wall)

Use it for ideas by all means, but never get the exact same... Always come up with the idea, then sit down with the artist to custom create your tattoo...

Nothing worst then walking around and seeing the exact same tattoo on a bunch of different people...

Which i have seen many times before...

Thats a fair enough point... But say something like a koi or dragon etc, custom is still the best way to go imo...

Then again, im also saving up to one day get a tebori tattoo done in Japan...

Flash is great for finding a starting point, but unless it's a classic design then they should be modified. I am so sick and tired of seeing the same crappy black panther tattoo everywhere. The shop I go to won't even do a stock design, they insist on customizing it in some way, even though they have won awards for the flash that they draw up. The idea is that everyone should have something unique. That's why I usually go in with an idea and talk it over with my artist and let him go nuts. My last one is one of my favorites and was done completely freehand. They enjoy having artistic freedom as well and usually will put a little more effort into something if they're enjoying doing it too.
