At one of my LFS stores today I saw "tattoo fish". They are silver mollies that have blue and pink polka dots, hearts, the word "love", stripes, etc. drawn on them. Of course they all looked like they weren't feeling too well. It's just a new low for dyed fish.

It's been around for awhile actually. I've seen it on barbs as well.

Thats gotta be rather stressful for the fish. Rather unnecessary, especially since we can breed fish/genetically engineer them to be whatever color we want. They're live animals for cryin out loud.

^ Its bad coz it really stresses the fish out... plus, the fact is they have to take the fish out of the water to give them the tattoo, and because of the out of water experience, and the stress, a lot of these fish die during the process and only a small percentage make it...

Also, not to sound rude, but when people get tattoos its a matter of personal choice to do so, fish unfortunately don't have that luxury and are just chosen and given a tattoo regardless if they want one or not...

All that plus they have to strip off their slime coat and use noxious chemicals to make the tattoos stay on the fish's body.

yea thats horrible...what would make someone want to do that? and the other bad thing is that some people find that appealing...i've seen those tattoos on parrot cichlids too...its a cruel n crazy world

I saw tattooed fish for the first time last month at a LFS, I used to shop there once in a while but I had to talk to the lady that I knew was the the owner, and convince her of how bad that really was. she acted surprised and ignorant, but I think she got the point. If you ever see this and you don't like it, then use the power of the consumer, get your opinion out there, tell the managers to avoid such fish.

unfortunately in Hong Kong that trick would not work, especially not on fish street... for them to lose one customer is nothing when there are hundreds of people that walk past their shop a day which are potential customers...

Here we got two giant gouramis ones around 14inches and nice looking the others a foot long and tattooed just seeing these fish together is a nice sample and I can not understand who would choose the goofy looking tattoed one.
