TDS Readings

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is how I set my HMA up now and seams to be working great

HMA filters the water first then to a T which splits the return water in two one goes straight to a flow tap then back to the tank to add minerals and buff gh and kh

The other pipe from the T goes to a inline tds meter then to a di resin chamber then the second tds meter then to another flow tap

As you can see the water before the di resin is 237ppm and after the di resin its 0ppm this is better than pure RO which is normally around 3-5ppm

The di resin last about 7-10 days which is no big deal to change and costs about £4.50 for 1.5 refills

I've never run into TDS issues with my rays.. now I have lost multiple spiney eels to TDS issues... when my other tanks where fine.. the only variable that I could test was TDS that was different. same substrate, same water source, same water conditiner, water permateres ideal ( 0-0-20ppm/less) but TDS over 400 and they would literally keel over and "choke" took me monthes to figure it out. they where in a community tank and I can admit I would let the water changes slide abit ( but i was doing them per TDS reading as nitrates always where acceptable) the only other difference is it was a planted tank. But I had spiney eels in other tanks that where just fine ( infact one of them is likely the largest or close to it of her species in captivity "raised") So def agree as a general rule TDS are nowhere near as important as other numbers.. but imo still important numbers to know.

I have no idea what in tank tds is as I can't do much about the in tank water apart from make sure the new water is better

It has never bothered me before and probably has no affect on the rays

Just seeing if it makes any difference for a few months

Right I was running di resin after my HMA to get 0 tds
What a waste of time that was as the resin was finished after 2-3 days

The tds even went higher than normal tap water once the resin was dead

If anyone is running resin just from HMA or tap then stop as the water has higher tds than you would get from the tap once the resin is dead

I have now added a RO membrane 150 gal per day but the flow is to low so I'm adding a pump in the morning

Tank TDS is 218 ppm, tap TDS is 189 ppm.

I found that conversion link very vague , it's just a chart.
My tap is 150, after I run it through my Di filter it gets knocked down to 25-110, then I change it . I make 50 gallons and add prime . My ray tank is around 200.
I use a ro/di for my reef , that comes out at 0, I buffer it before adding to tank .

i must admit the running 2 drips is working well

the only problem im having is keeping the temp down as the flow is much less than before

you cant turn the flow from just the hma up or the ro pump runs dry on the ro drip
