i swear Haps are from Malawi?
They are, especially the ones listed above.

haps are haplochromis meaning basically big colorful and predatory african cichlid mianly you get them from malawi but almost all victorians are haps.
i think that personally if you are starting out i would go with either malawi's or south americans as these are both pretty easy to keep and almost always available locally

From the reading I've been doing over the past several days, I am starting to lean towards Malawi. Possibly mbuna or peacocks, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

I understand that these guys don't have much of a personality. what can I expect?

Mbuna? I think you will find that they have quite a bit of personality!

Peacocks are easier I think because some mbunas are really aggressive. You can look into getting some of the milder types to start with such as the electric yellows, electric blue mangano, white top hara an many other types are relatively peaceful and can be kept with peacocks, then you will be able to do more variety. Be careful with the red zebras and other types of metriaclima and melanochromis they sometimes have a little too much personality lol.
I don't know who told you mbunas have no personality... cuz they sure do!!! Your gonna love watching them! R you gonna do all male or a mix?
all cichlids have personalities that I have found and I've just had oscars and african cichlids, I have a mixture of mbuna, peacocks, and haps.
