Teacup stingray care

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah teacup is just in reference to size. And retics actually get fairly long so a 125 is not enough imo

I would not keep the retic in a 125, also a lot depends on if you have adequate filtration and you are set up for weekly water changes plus twice a day feeding, if you dont know about water quality then that is a start. You will need large external filters or a sump plus a good supply of money for food.

I have don't lots of research and have found that most people say 125 would work for a retic.

and those people would be idiots so please dont listen to them.
as far as the term "tea cup" that is a term that i wish would end.
its a term any lfs will use to describe a small ray...7 times out of ten is a retic..
but i have seem hystrix, motoro and humerosa's labeled the same.

a 125 is an ok tank for a retic for year to year and a half..give or take..but cannot live it in for life..
most will say you need a 3' deep tank...i think 30" is fine for a retic..but thats just my opinion.

i wouldnt buy a retic..because they do die easier them most rays due to care before they even hit the LFS.

my advice : but a captive bred motoro from a member here..but only after you know you can get a 300+ tank in the next year.

I do 50 percent water changes weekly and have a fluval 405 filter running I allways feed my fish twice a day and would be more than willing tob spend the money needed to feed him. And of course I would upgrade my filter before purchasing a ray and would only keep him until he outgrew the tank, then either upgrade my tank or bring him back to my local fish store. I love all of my fish and hould never want them to be unhapy, even if it means giving them away. I have a passion for stingrays and want to keep one so badly.

Thank you for your advice, I greatly appreciate it. I have a unique relationship with my lfs. After ordering the ray for us, they sad they would be able to keep him for a while to ensure he was healthy and eating well. They said we would not be obligated to buy him unless we felt he was perfectly healthy. they would also order us a different one if we weren't hapy and give us a fish credit if he died while we were keeping him. I don't know if this would change your opinion on buying a retic vs motoro or any other species. Are there any other small species that would fit in the tank longer than a motoro? I would love a motoro but he would need a much larger grow out tank than a retic.
