Also, to make things slightly more complicated. Most of the time smelt sold at your local grocery store isn't really smelt at all. In most cases they are Silversides which are thiaminase free.

However I'm still not convinced with the impact of thiaminase and freshwater predatory fish consuming them. Especially considering how so many people from Asia have such great success feeding a diet primarily high on Comets. But this is neither here nor there.

If you are worried about thiaminase in your smelt, check to make sure before feeding if it's actually silversides or smelt you are feeding to your fish.

Nice, how bigs the armatus?
oh he is about 11-12" or so.

Do you have 2 armatus or one? One has a banged up nose and one doesn't can you post a up close pic of the banged nose?
I just have one arm. He does not have a banged up nose at all, not sure why it looks like that in those pix. Must be the food we are seeing. He is pretty calm.

Good shots.. love those teeth.. true monsters..
thanks!

Nice pics!

Looks like one of your GATF might be a black-headed one like mine. :)
thanks, i really like them, but they need to get some size on them!!

When it comes to teeth, not much beats those guys.

He is eating tilapia and lake smelt, but not feeding him crazy amount of smelt like in the past. I am not sure i believe the myth, but want to do what ever i can to help this one get big!

I am not feeding the normal yellow tail looking smelt, mine are called lake smelt and they are smaller, more like anchovies. i will get the scientific name of what they are tonight. But i am still trying to feed mostly tilapia.

Love that armatus! How difficult was it to get him to take the smelt? I'm in the process of breaking my Scomb, and seeing your armatus in action is inspiring.

he was broke when i got him. With lots of current they are not that hard to break. Pieces of food look like little fish blowing around in current.
He is not eating smelt but eating tilapia.

Nice! Now a Wolf and your set haha

You mean an angry Walleye??? :banhim:

I was hesitant about getting one cause of the reputation they have, but after having one, I wouldn't trade it for any fish.... None of the fish I've kept over the years have had the kind of impact on me as my wolf has. They can really change a person's outlook on a lot of things.

Hopefully Keepin will help me with Keepin the faith that it is possible to keep Armatus in captivity, cause after years of failed attempts I don't have much faith left, but it only takes 1 monster grown up by a fellow MFKer to keep that faith going.... :)
