Tegu or Savanna Monitor

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have an '08 Arg B&W Tegu from Bobby Hill and I simply couldn't be happier with my purchase... I have two local friends who both have adult Savs and both stopped referring to their Savs as "puppy dog tame" when they got to know my Tegu...

He's been to several reptile shows with children poking at him non stop... just last week we were at PetCo and a 5 year old spent 5 minutes trying to catch his tongue, grabbign it a few times. He never bit...

I've had my Tegu for over two years, can grab his tongue, no bite... I can put my finger in his mouth when he yawns, no bite... I can take his plate of food away from him while eating, no bite...

Mine went into a full hibernation his first winter but has stayed fairly active his second winter and so far this year. He is less active and lazy in the winter, but int he summer time he is very very active. I think most lazy Tegus (or monitors) are lazy because a lack of inspiration.

I agree that a Tegus gender dictates it's "minimum acceptible exnclosure", and I agree with Rrcoolj's opinions (male = 8'x4'; female = 6'x3'). Even with that sized enclsorue they will need additional exercise. My 50" male lives in an 8' x 3' enclosure in the winter and on a 6' x 12' outdoor balcony/deck in the summer time. It's also important to give them obstacles/landscape to explore.
