Hello. I have a 55 gallon tank and my Telescope gold fish is about 5 inches and he seems to have a issue with his eye. I really don’t know what’s wrong with him but he is a black and orange color fish and his eyes are black but the issue it seems like one of his eyes is peeling and turning like white. I used Melafix to treat him, please if you guys can give me any advice.

If that’s an angelfish in the tank with goldfish then I would assume the angelfish is attacking him.

He looks like he’s been attacked as his fins are torn. I bet if you looked closer you would also notice missing scales. I don’t think he will make it.

My best advise is separate the fish or re-home the ones you don’t want.

You have aggressive fish in with defenceless fish, one is tropical and one is cold water/temperate. Not sure what else you have in with your goldfish.

Goldfish usually do well on their own or with dojo loaches. There are a few others that play nice with them but I cannot recall them off the top of my head....it’s been a while since I’ve kept a goldfish. I just remember having a hard time finding suitable tank mates.

I mean it’s kinda strange cause these fish have been together for about 8 months never a problem. I have the goldfish with three other Ryukin goldfish and 4 angel fish only 2 of them are small and the other 2 are adult angelfishes. I do have one Yo yo loach and a small red tail shark and a pleco. That’s pretty much it. Do you think than it was an attack the reason why to be honest I don’t think ? it is because the other eye ? is getting large like it looks like it’s going to pop. I have to inform you that this fish I got it from someone who wasn’t properly taking care of it so I took and he was doing fine with me until now. I am a bit worried about his eyes if they might pop. I do water change every Saturday and atleast 50 percent. I did you Melflix and API salt to see and I used ammonia conditioner as well. I guess all I can do is watch him. I get the feeling he won’t make it.

This sounds about right At about 8 months of age angelfish start to teach sexual maturity, you may have a pair now trying to defend a potential breeding site. Maybe they have already laid eggs?

I also found my yo-yo was trying to attack my other fish when I owned them as well, I quickly re-homed.

I cannot comment on the red tail shark but have a feeling he too could have caused some damage.

The pleco, if a common pleco could also be causing damage to the goldfish by trying to suck the slime coat off.

It just sounds like you have a very mixed bag of fish that are not compatible. You should either separate all goldfish into their own tank, re-home the goldfish if no other tank is available, or re-home the other fish if you want to keep the goldfish.

The other eye that you say looks like it is going to pop could be due to poor water quality, though I’m not sure of your tank size I’m assuming it’s much too small for the stock you have.

Goldfish are messy fish and most people do not provide them with enough water changes. When I was keeping 3-4 goldfish in a 60g tank I was doing 90% weekly water changes and it still wasn’t enough, my white fantail often had red steaking in the fins a day or so before the scheduled water change. I highly doubt 50% is adequate for your current stocking.

I know you say it came from a tank that was uncared for, yet you say you’ve had it for 8 months...8 months isn’t more than enough time for the goldfish to recover from the previous tank conditions. The problems you are currently seeing are a result of your current care or lack there of.

I’m not trying to be insulting in anyway, I think you might be new to fish keeping and you are trying you hardest to provide the best home for your fish. I have no doubt about it, that’s why your here asking questions which is fantastic! Please don’t stop learning!

I really think your problems come down to incompatible tank mates. Take some time to research the fish you have, you will see it to. Then make you decision on which direction you would like to take your tank in...cooler goldfish tank or more tropical community. You can’t have both (in the same tank)

Unfortunately for this fish if it is not moved into a tank alone or a goldfish only tank it will continually get picked on until it’s demise. Even if you do move it over and provide the best care for it he still might not make it. And that’s okay too, the only thing you can do is learn from your mistakes.

When we know better we do better.

I found my weather loaches, same fish just different coloration, attacking my black moors so they’re now in a community tank.

No offense taken. I rather people be straight forward. I have removed the yo yo loach to a 20 gallon tank including my red tail. The angel fish I have moved them to my 125 with my other cichlids the adult ones only. The small ones would get killed . I will do a water change Saturday and I will take your advice. The reason why I put the those fish in together is because I didn’t want them to be in my 125. I have some mean fish in that tank suck oscars and Jardani arowona and Jack Dempsey and red devil and Bichir and black convict. They are a mean bunch . It’s a good thing cause they balance each other out but when I toss anything new they attack no matter what. It’s reason why I had to put a lot of caves and some plants that will let the others hide just in case their getting bullied. I’m not that new to fish I guess I’m kinda new to goldfish in general. I have a few of my friends keep them with angel fish never had an issue. The reason the Ryukin that I have an all white one was also being mistreated and I took it as well and it got huge in the 8 months it has been with me that fish seems to be the boss in the tank most other fish tend to wait for it to eat first than they eat. I personally never had any fish kill each other but in this tank that o have it’s kinda crazy to see this. Like I said moved some fish over to the new tank also I will be quarantine the gold fish in my 29 gallon to see what’s wrong with it.

Is good to see that you have moved all potential problem fish away from the goldfish and now the goldfish is in quarantine. I do hope he pulls through.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I don’t think your angelfish fit in with any of the stock you have in the 125g. They will most likely be toast if one of the other fish decide it’s in his territory.

Also your 125g sounds way over stocked. I’m not sure if your fish are adults but it does sound that way.

Ideally in a 125g you would only want 1-2 oscars (if a pair, some people would even argue that)

I don’t know much about aros but I believe it will be much too large for that size tank.

And a red devil is another one of those fish who would do well with 125g alone or with some smaller dithers.

I wish you the best of luck with your fishes!

My wife loves goldfish and we've flushed at least 4 fancies. They are the most sensitive fish in the house. I've learned more from them than any other including a flowerhorn as far as illness, bladder problems etc...most importantly water quality and tankmates. I worry the frogs are gonna gang up on my red cap now!

My 125 the fish are all kinda small, they are not one foot long or 8 inches either pretty small. I only have one Oscar, i did have two of them a white and a black but the black one was sick I should noticed when I bought it cause he was swimming awkwardly the day I put him in. Arowona seems to be ok no problem with him . They are pretty friendly within each other only because they have a lot of hiding places to go around. Especially the black convict and Jack chill in their cave. Personally I didn’t want a arowona but I got it as a gift ? and well I can’t say no thank you.
Personally I get most other fish keepers are very strict follow the guidelines to a T,but personally like I said never really had any issues with my other fish. Goldfish in general I’m new too and well hopefully he makes it if he doesn’t I’ll take it as a lesson learned.

It’s just something to be cautious And aware of.

I thought I read oscars in one of your above posts.

I literally just read another post where the poster just said it’s takes a really skillful fish keeper to be able to be successful in keeping a mixed bag of fish.

Goldfish are one of those fish that will test a fish keeper to the max, everyone thinks they are easy peasy but they are not. They will test your patience’s, your skill as a fish keeper, and they will force you to learn new things. My goldfish have given me more problems than any of my other fish I keep or have kept.
