finding the real deal itself would be quite the feat unfortunately. Last lead I had on the real thing was back in 2019. These really have been absent for quite a while. There are 3 morphs to this species. Blue, Green, & Gold. very slight differences but enough to make ID'ing the real thing a little difficult for those that have not seen/kept the real thing for an extended period of time. In years past they were considered T. aureus at one time, then they were considered T. helleri, and then T. ellioti (before ellioti formally became maculipinnis) so, that makes it even harder to get the real thing. Care wise, they are a cool water species and need heavier oxygenated water. Unlike its relative T. meeki, these do not tolerate warmer tanks for extended periods and they do not handle nitrates. They, like some south American species(think oscars) will pit out in the face rapidly if water loses quality. Moreso than typical central American species. This is likely why they were in the trade for such a short time.
