Tell me if I'm strange..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nope, you're not strange.
Next time I leave, gonna pre-measure every feeding. Last time I left for a week, showed husband everything exactly more than once, like how many pinches.
Came home to waaay over-fed conditions. @first sight, I blurted out "Holy CRAP how much have you been feeding them!?!"
The fish were obese, excess food all over. I had demonstrated and told him "all food needs to be eaten & gone in a couple minutes with NO leftovers".
Luckily, no harm done. but if it'd been 2 weeks? I dunno. After all day driving & worn out from tough week, before-bed wc's were a bit much.
His pinches are def bigger than mine...swore he counted them :-I

There should be a MFK buddy system for people that live close enough to each other I think its hard for some people to get how we feel about our fish.

At first read I just wanted to say yea your nuts no matter what but honestly last time I was away from home I heard that power outages were happening in just area and I was worried everything would shut off maybe not come back on. Etc. I feel your pain.

Hello; This will buck the trend, but it does seem strange to be so concerned. I have been away many times from two days to over a week. I set things up as best as possible and do not give it any thought while gone.
I did come home to an almost empty tank after a three day trip due to a seam letting go, but this would have happened even if I were home. This did not lead to the type of anxiety you describe on later trips.
What you describe seems a bit strange in my experience but you are not alone as the posts so far have indicated. Does not sound like much of a vacation if you are worried all of the time. Good luck with this.

I feel the same way if I have to leave. I've left a few times and have come home to FAT fish. So from that point on I would have a designated plastic sandwich bag with a days worth of food in it for each day that I was going to be gone, labeled 'Monday, Tuesday' etc. Also I leave out the siphon, a bucket, and my battery operated airstone. All that before I leave for a week and I don't worry too terribly much. My fish are tough as nails though.

some people value there fish differently. I worry about mine all the time even when at home at night I can hear them splashing and it would wake me up and I would have to check on them but then again I have some expensive young fish. I wont go on vacation for a while at least not for about a year until I know they are 100% stable thats just me when I get new stuff.

Hello; Intresting thread. I have been doing this for over 50 years and can say for sure that eventually something will happen to all of your fish. All that I have ever kept are dead with the exception of the ones I now have. I suspect that something will happen to these if I live long enough. The best that I hope for is that my fish live a descent life span in good health.
Since going to very light stocking densities a couple of decades ago even the issues such as power outages have become much less of a problem.
To each his own, but that kind of stress would take so much away from the joy of the hobby.
Hope things get better for those that have these issues.

I don't constantly worry about my fish but when I leave for an extended period of time I have no one that I would leave in charge of my fish. Most the people I interact with don't understand my hobby nor do they want to. I don't constantly worry about my kids either but I wouldn't just leave them with anyone.

it is nerve racking. a few years ago my family was on a week long cruise during the summer.came home to all my fish dead and the house smelling like a zoo. cause death, neighbor told me that due to airconditioners running 24/7 a power transformer blew out nearby apparently the filters didnt kick back in and i lost everything:cry: i still have the pics :(

I don't worry about my tank too much, but I alway preportion out all feedings and have someone I trust stop by daily to feed and check on everything. I've found that proper planning, and eliminating as many variables as possible makes it much easier to forget about everything at home and enjoy the tropics.
