He looks nothing like either of the fish you mentioned (I googled them). He has patterning like my old venustus used to, but not as strong colouring. This is maybe because he is about an inch long (hence the bad quality photos). He is in a 10G temporarily (hopefully in my 20G before Christmas)
He looks a lot like this (baby Venustus):

if you dont think that we know what we are talking about then dont ask us questions

Yeah, I agree that I could have named the thread better. I was just hoping it was the fish I know about. Now I have one of these (nice ID work rottbo) :headbang2

Sorry for the whole argueing thing. I know you people know your fish well, but it was just wierd how it looked so similar to the baby venustus pic. I do agree now though, I appear to have a poly :)

Thanks everyone (and sorry for annoying you),
To make it up, I'll get some nicer pics when I get home and post them for you :D

Doesn't look like a venustus at all. Looks like a fusco. Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus.
What size tank will you be keeping it in? Ideally the fish should be kept in a 6' tank.

Due to the lateral line that is clearly connected down the side from front to back i have to agree.. Juvie Nimbochromis fuscotaeniatus..

And it does look like a fusco :) Sorry.. Just really doesn't llok like a Ven ...

Oh :grinno:
So. I have either a poly or a fusco. I've seen pics of both species as adults and they look pretty sexy :naughty: I'm guessing they are both aggressive species, thats okay by me  But one question...when big enough, they eat feeders right? :D
Thanks a lot,
Paul

If you look at rottbo's fish you can clearly make out the peppered spots in between the markings. His fish is a poly no doubt.
A fusco x poly hybrid isn't at all far-fetched since they have very similar base markings.
The difference between them would be the peppering on the poly. Adult male polystigma also tend to be more green/orange than the blue/red of the fuscos. Polys will have the same peppering on the pectoral fins.
Some variants have less spots than others but even in these less-spotty variants juvenile and female fish show a considerable amount of peppering on the body and on the pectoral fins. Adult males of these variants may lose much of it on the body.
