Hello Everyone--

I've finally found a source for cyprichromis and so after 6 or so years of having a Malawi tank, I'm going to sell all my fish and go all Tanganyikan.

Mainly because I'm obsessed with how beautiful the cyprichromis are, but also because they are less aggressive.

I'll do much more homework (as I always do) before starting the tank, but would like to hear about any gotchas that you think I should watch out for.

Cyps are awesome. They get along with anything. They're quite mellow, but are capable of holding their own. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is keeping them with large frontosa. Cyps are their natural source of food in the wild

Cool, thanks. No offense to anyone, but I never really liked frontosa, so no worries there.

So, after really thinking it over, I tried to sell all of my Malawi's on Craig's List and I only got one beginner who didn't know what they were doing. I ended up getting a really fabulous store credit at a LFS that will be getting some cyps in spring. Now I get to start my tank all over again! Pretty cool--now that the trauma of transporting my fish is over!

I'm going to study up on what other fish, like algae eaters, etc. get along with the high pH of lake Tany.

What sized tank?

Cyps do well with a wide range of Tangs. Sandsifters are a great combo with them. Altolamps will do well but fry won't survive in tank. Julis and shellies do well.

They are very cool fish to watch IMHO.

It's a 56 gallon "show tank" style. I'll be putting up a little rock formation in the corner for harassed females to hide, and the rest will be wide open crushed pooka shell substrate. I'm thinking of putting a little plant in front of one of my bubblers to hide it. It's been so long since I've had plants ('cause Malawi's destroy them), I'd kind of like to have a couple again.

Thanks for the list. I'll take a look and see if there's anything there I like. In addition to cyps, I kind of like 'Lamprologus' brevis Katabe ''Orange Head'' shell dwellers. They have them Dave's Rare Fish. http://www.davesfish.com

Dave's has a great selection of Julis. They'd go well with the brevis, with the possible exception of the J. marlieri 'Magra' and the various J. regani variants he has. L. brevis and other shellies show their best personality with sand substrate. Plants would do well with all three species (as long as they aren't too close to the shell bed for the shellies where they'd constantly be disturbed. I didn't have any for mine but I've heard that Cyps will enjoy large, long leafed plants for cover.

I would go with a sand substrate and if you do get Shellie's set the up on one end of the tank as the cyps will settle on the bottom at night
