Telling Apart PBB, laps and guinea laps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Btw I see pics 1, 5 &6 of pbb do not have the monsterous looking head shape u were mentioning. They look more like the nigerian lap heads. I have seen many shipments of nigerian laps and pbb into my country and till now, I have problem telling nigerian lap and pbb apart as they are very similar in many ways. Some nigerian laps, in 1 or 2 shipments, do have monsterous looking head. The only explainationI can think of is that pbb are mixed into these shipments.

Maybe someone can enlighten those who still can't tell apart, more on what to look out for. I read many previous posts and still learning.

From my experience. I've seen PBB with lapradei looking head. I've seen lapradei with PBB looking head. I also forgot to mention to count the finlets. PBB have 16-19.(16 is normal count). Sometimes they have 14 or 15. Lapradeis generally have 14 I believe. I've heard about lapradeis with 16 finlets. Bichirs vary greatly. But you would have to take the all the factors(pattern, headshape, finlet, etc) into consideration before concluding if a bichir is a PBB or lap.

That's the problem. Most of the newbies really dunno how to tell them apart. I have seen PBB with 14 filets at a hobbyist's house, and heard there was a Lap with 16 finlets(haven't see it before) too. So its all about seeing more and spending money to buy a few to learn. End of the day, we have to trust the Lfs that we are getting the real deal. :)

Its good that we have photos to show and videos to see to learn. Happy learning everyone. :)

Telling these guys apart are no easy task I guess. Good thing we are all chipping in. I think we should all post pictures of our PBBs and Laps to get a wider viewpoint, since there are so many variations involved.
