I love that specimen Matt!

The other two I have yet to isolate looks more like Cichlaguapote's 4" specimens. Also have more than 50 that looks like two spot Orinos.

If you ever want to know the whole story on florida pbass talk to Paul Shafland in boca raton...he is director of the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission's Non-Native Fish Research Laboratory and "THE guy" who brought in all the peacocks for the florida project in the early 1980's and is responsible for the breeding of hybrid "types" from different south american locals so they would do better in the south florida environment than pure strain cichla...he will tell you the exact locations of the original collection ;) he was the person responsible for bringing pbass to florida and ran the project since the beginning as a means to control exotics and later in 84 as a launch of the fishery.... so in truth you do know what your getting in your box of chocolates ;)
and you can pick out a florida hybrid from other cichla as there are distinct differences.

Thanks DM. I think I'll pass on Mr. Shafland's opinion. If he knew what he was stocking the Fl waters with, why would he call them Ocellaris?.;)

Because back in the day before all the classification of cichla most peacock bass were refered to as ocellaris "refering to the eyespot on the tail" and temensis were simply called speckled peacocks...monoculus ect were pretty much unknown as most of the rest...;)

No, I don't think you're the one who got too excited. It's probably the fish are too jumpy this time of year. I just lost one too. Hooked it and it managed to get away before I can reel it in. After that, it would take off before a cast even hits the water. The same was true of 5 other targets. They take off soon as I swing the tackle back. They probably sense the vibrations through the colder air sooner and sense the danger much faster. It's much easier in Summer.:(
