My tank is always kept at 78-80°F. I went on vacation for a week and by brother in law was watching my tank. All he did was feed the fish. I told him to feed a lil less than I do to keep the excess food to a minimum. Anyhow, I get home and my tanks at 84°F. I tried to lower it by turning off the heater to no avail. I tried water changes but the temp goes right back up. Im guessing its the ambient temp in the house but I just want to know if its ok? When I plug my heater back in in flashed red indicating the temp is to high. I dont see any change in my fish btw. Am I just being a worry wort? Like I said, my tank is usually at 78-80°F and Has never been otherwise.

Should I:
A) Keep doing water changes to maintain the lower temp?
B) Do nothing, Because 84° is normal?
C) Other???

my tank stays at around 84 for long periods in the summer and my fish seem to be doing great. it might be kinda high, but u set it around that range when ur treating illness, so i dont know. it might just be me, but it seems like my fish seem to eat alot more when the temp is up as well. i have mostly parachromis so that might be different too since they are central american fish

Get a new heater..........OR..........You are probably used to doing 1-2 water changes per week, right?????????Maybe you just never really seen your heater heat the water that high because of the water changes........OR.............It is summer time, you have a room thermometer, check it.........I think buying a new heater will save a lot in the long run..........

If your tank has lids, removing them could help cool the water down, at least it does for my tank. blowing a fan or even getting an air stone bubbler will creat surface agitation which will cool the water down also.
Your fishes metabolism speeds up with higher temps so you might find that they are always hungry.
If your heater is unplugged and the water is still high, chances are the heater is not the problem.
If running the air is not an option, at night open the windows and have the lids slightly off. I've found this a pretty effective way to cool down the water. but i am in socal lol.

an open tank - - or using eggcrate light diffusers as the cover - - helps a lot, and then you can also set up a fan to blow accross the surface

Check the temp in your house. If it is naturally high then that maybe the problem. Make sure the tank isn't in a window getting sunlight or in drafty area of heat. If the tank maintains itself at 84 ditch the heater. Also check the temp with another thermometer. Keep the tank well areated since it is warm and there is likely to be less dissolved oxygen. A fan blowing across the top with the lid open will help. Make sure you use eggcrate or something to keep the fish in.

unplug heater and put in icecubes it got my tank down from 90 F once

you could fill plastic bottles with water and freeze them. float one in the tank will help.
i wouldn't worry unless it gets too hot though

I have also used ice cubes and colder water while doing a water change, it took my temperature in my tank quite a bit. But 84 degrees isn't too bad people do put their temp up that high to get rid of diseases but it will result in very aggressive fish at the same time.
