Temp??

Considering some species of gar (spotted, shortnose, and longnose) survive over winter in states such as Montana, Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, I would think they could take pretty cold temperatures. Not that you'd want to keep them that cold year round.

Why are you wanting to know?

YOY of spotted gars will stop eating at 60F, so i wouldn't risk going below that with smaller fishes in general. they can survive, but many may not eat. what's the reasoning for dropping the temp? in cases of most home aquaria with gars, i wouldn't push the temp much below 62-65F--

how low of a temp can gars live in?

Longnose Gar have a natural habitat that extends into Canada. I live in MD. and they advertise Alligator Gar fishing in the Pocomoke toward the sothern end of the state, so they survive cold winter also.

Listen to Solomon, he is the man. Short of catching a gar outdoor and keeping it in an outdoor pond, it is unwise to transfer any fish (Gar included) that has grown accustomed to a heated aquaria environment into an unheated environment without a slow, very lengthy reacclimation period.

It does not work keeping a fish in a constant temperature for over a year, then think it is OK to acclimate it to a colder and wider temp. range environment in a half hour to an hour acclimation period.

Lower your aquar. temp. around 2 degrees F. per week until into the 50's range, and hold steady for a month before transferring it. It would require an uber expensive chiller, and is probably not feasible.

Just go and catch one, stick it in a live well (cooler with battery operated air pump. and slap it in your pond would be my suggestion. Quick, easy and virtually cost free!:headbang2

i was thinking of putting him in my outdoor pond but now mostlikey not

Funny thing Danny. I live in Westminster, Maryland, not Cali! I'm sure that your hometown is way more coola then my backwash arshebackward gestapo laiden poophole!

I see you list it as so.cal, but I am not familiar with it. I was out in the San Diego and Encinada areas around 15 years ago though. Where is Westminster in relation to them?

If you want to put tank raised gar into your outdoor pond, just make sure that they are at least 2 years old and do it at whatever time of year that your outdoor water temperature reaches the 70+ degree F range (similar to where you have them temp-wise inside).

gar are illegal in cali. ur askin for trouble doin it. and while certain gar species can survive low temps, certain regional gar can survive colder. A spotted gar from michigan can survive colder temps than say a spotted gar from luisianna
