temperament of the salvini cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a pair awhile ago. Male almost ripped off the female's bottom lip because she wasn't ready to breed again. My Dats and GT couldn't get to the other side of the tank with them there. They are pretty aggressive, but they would hide when they weren't begging for food.

I agree with agression, they can be one of the nastiest cichlids you can own in the right setting. Think of a mini Umbee. They pretty much have the same build and similar nasty teeth. I have had some in the past and currently have 4 F0 Rio Grijalva grow outs I got from Jeff Rapps last friday. So far doing fine in my 125g. No really any agression yet, but that will change. Any time they start posturing, they get a visit from the King of the Tank and are reminded of their place. They hav't even tried to eat any baby platties which I wish they would. I am having to net sub adults every 2 weeks.

Anyway, they are a cool fish to own and look great in a planted tank. Just have smaller dithers to keep their agression shifted off of each other. When I get a bonded pair, they are going in a 55g planted tank with some of these platties.

Salvini's Are Nasty and they should be in the Dovii and Jag family cuz of tee aggressive nature. I had one in a 125 gallon and he killed 3 fish that was 2x bigger then he was. I love the colors of this fish but i dont wanna take the chance of a Salvini killing my other fish so he had to go. they bag a huge punch for there size

I love these guys. I just got my first one a month ago and he's a beast... Definately growing on me. Nasty nasty temper! He's in a 180 with a grammodes, flowerhorn, gt, red devil, two red Texas. They are all 3-5 inches with the two Texas being largest. The salvin slots third...basically have in with just as nasty tankmates!

I would mostly agree with all the above. I have 2 males in my 125 gallon and the bigger of the 2 which is about 6" hangs with my 7" midas pretty well. They are tough fish, but I guess in my few times owning them I have never seen them outright kill another fish. I think they are totally worth trying pending on what you are doing with them.

But I have to ask Original Poster, what are your thoughts and plans after all of this information?

I have had a female in the past and I currently have a 3'' male. My female wasn't that aggressive and was killed by a firemouth. My male chases others sometimes, but not bad. Males are supoosed to be more aggressive. It just depends on the individual.

I bred salvini for 5 years, and have owned at least one for the last 10ish years..... these guys are tough, very attractive, and active. They are like everyone says one of the nastiest fish around... when people talk about tank busters for a small aquarium (around 55 gallons) these are always my first suggestion.. they're not as personable as some of the bigger guys but if your just talking aggresion within the tank......

Imo/e these are very good fish to own if you keep larger cichlids... I like to put mine with jags, argentea, loisellei, and other big dudes. Something I always thought was cool is they seem to go well with meeki, of course I'm talking a pair of meeki and a solo salvini. I wouldent even consider a breeding pair with anything because like was said these guys are rough. I think they are rewarding and fun to keep hands down one of my favorite. Will have a salvini as long as I'm in the hobby and I don't plan to ever not be in the hobby. Good luck.

I purchased a salvini about a month ago, and it is a real cool fish, he is only about 2 inches now and not causing any trouble yet, i have him in with a juvinile frontosa, baby flowerhorn, and a feather fin catfish all is well in the grow out tank, but i love this fish it is beautiful and fast fast fast fast lightning fast!!!!

My male is courting a female texas in the pond and just ripped a clown loach apart. Found the poor thing with no fins and one white eye laying on the shallow corner.
