I challenge anyone to keep a tank full of large predators at 5ppm nitrates. I'm happy when I see my nitrates at 40ppm. I agree nitrates are bad, but I think the reasonable amount per tank is different depending on size and what fish you have.

Agreed.5ppm just isn't imaginable with 2 Oscars and a pleco and who knows what else. I shot for 40ppm or less
 
I've got one adult Oscar, an L200 and three raphaels in my 125g. My nitrates are ten ppm at the end of a week. It's the lowest I've been able to keep it.
