I just got axolotl's, and the fan I have fortunately keeps the water much cooler than necessary. While it won't hurt them to keep the fan on 27/7 I wouldn't mind not wasting electricity by having the fan run all the time. I'm looking for way to control a fan to turn on when the temperature exceeds a certain degree. I've never done this before, so I thought I'd ask everyone on here, does this look like a decent way?

That ranco control will work. Check the amperage rating of the control contacts and make sure it is more then your fan. I work in the HVAC industy so i use these all the time. I prefer the Johnson Controls A419 version, but they both have the same function. You would need to have some basic electrical know how as they do need to be wired properly. They aren't a simple plug and play device.

Thanks a lot for letting me know that, I thought they were a plug and play, you think someone with minimal knowledge on electricity would be able to safely set it up with some research?

well. here's what you'd have to do, you can decide if your cappable. There will be 2 terminals where your 120v (assuming your using 120v, the controls will come in either 24v, 120 or 208volts) comes in to power the control itself, and then you need to wire the fan in series with the either the normally open contacts, or the normally closed contacts, depending how you want the control to operate so that the switch in the control will be able to bring the fan on and off. You can set them to either cut out at setpoint, or cut in at setpoint. i guess it sounds kinda complicated. It would probably come with a wiring diagram, but you'd still have to understand the voltage your working with and what a series circuit is.

Ok, well I've done a bit of searching and even though I found a step by step web page the pictures are not working, and I'm kind of nervous about getting one and not being able to wire it. I hate to ask you more questions, but I have very little experience with this kind of stuff, so would this work? I found it while searching on how to wire it, and it looks like all i have to do is plug it in if I buy this, and it's only a bit more expensive.
