I very much second this hypothesis. Pond pumps are very inefficient and what energy is not converted to water movement becomes heat. If you have the pump motor raised out of the water that is not good as I bet that the cal pump is designed to run only submerged and it needs the water to cool the motor. I would get it submerged and cooling before you have a sump full of epoxy goo.

Or you can just wait until winter and use the tank to heat/humidify your house.
