temperature jump

More than likely the heater was not able to handle higher temps. of 87 degrees for long periods, therefore, malfunctioned. You're lucky. The heater could of been shorting and shocking your fishes. I had this happen to me on a faulty heater a couple months back.
 
I wouldnt have lowerd it so fast.

I guess w/o a backup u have no choice but still, 87 to 95/95 to 70's....

Ouch that is some conciderable stress and id imagine u really need to max ur water quality

Do a water change tonite with 80-85° water so it has a chance to stay warmer and not keep spiking like that! Maybe turn the air temp up as well

Get that heater asap, as to what one idk i use a cheepo and its always worked.
