76 to 79 fine IMHO, you get into the 80is and they more aggressive and hungry. I run my oscars at 78 and my jags and JD, they spawn just fine and not overly aggressive.
important to remember there metabolism is regulated to tank temp. heat the tank up? faster metabolism. lower temp, slower, this can be used to regulate nitrate levels with out hurting your fish, to a certain extent. lower temp with in the fish,s perams will reduce ammonia out put.
When I have snorkeled in the cenotes where JDs live, I have been surprised at how cool the waters have sometimes been, and that there are up wellings and currents from the caves below that can change temps in very short distances, anywhere from high to low 70sF.
And while in Panama a few months back, some of the tree shaded streams that begin in the mountains where convicts live, were also somewhat cooler than I expected.

I think fish can tolerate a much lower temperature than what we keep them at. I think most ca/sa fish would be just fine in the low 70's. I'm sure in the wild the temps are always constantly changing especially depending on the season, altitude, and how deep of water they are in.
With that being said I always keep fish between 78-80.
