I have a couple of pieces of 48"x26" tempered glass that is 3/8" thick. I was wondering how wide i could make a plywood tank with these sheets. If the tank was about 6 ft wide and 26" tall with only 1 viewing wondow; how wide could I make it?

You could make it 48" wide. But if you used two viewing windows, you could make it 96" wide.

(If the window opening was six feet wide, with one pane of glass there would be a twelve inch hole on each side of the glass and that would leak quite a bit.)

...this isn't a homework question, is it?

Seriously though, there isn't a limit if you design & brace properly. How big do you want to go and how big of a space do you have to work with?

If you did a single window, you could use the second sheet as part of your hood as a light protector.

I think you should use both and make the tank at least 8 feet, obviously with a brace in between the two windows. Theres no way in hell I would use a nice piece of glass like that for a lid lol.

If you only use one piece of glass, you can still make the tank as wide as you want...you just won't be able to see most of it, which would suck.

Actually I have 5 sheets:headbang2:headbang2

So my delima is do I make 1 monster tank with multiple windows or 5 individual tanks. So you guy are saying that I could make the tank 8 or even 12+ feet long and and 48" wide. I was wondering if the 3/8" glass in thick enough to make the tank 48" wide?

Could I do a 12' tank with 3 viewing windows or the front and 48" wide with a viewing window on each end???

How much room do you have and what kinds of fish do you want to keep?

I have plenty of room in the garage. I have 3 aros, 3 wide bar dats, 1 NGT, 1 Indo dat, 7 different species of polys, and some other future monster fish.

in general its the depth not the width that depends on thickness. proper bracing * you can go on & on.

How far do you want to go?
