Windshields aren't tempered. Every other piece of glass is, but windshields aren't.

<<Tempered glass is stronger than regular glass.>>

Not when it comes to the edge. Ever see a regular tank with shelling on the corner cause someone hit it? It will still hold water. Tempered is toast if that happens.

My windshield is tempered, it shattered into a million pieces when it broke.

Some are laminated glass, which is made up of several laminates of regular glass with a silicone like adhesive in between.

The main reason I prefer standard plate over tempered is if it breaks, most times it will simply crack and let your tank drain out through the crack. The silicone will usually hold it in place. If your lucky, that crack will be in the top half of the tank so you won't lose your fish. You won't have this chance with tempered as it will shatter into a thousand pieces dumping your fish out in one foul swoop just like the above pic. If the edges are not going to be protected, don't use tempered. As I understand it, tempered glass usually has slightly less clarity than float glass.

the most important thing to remember is that you will not be able to drill into tempered glass if you decide that you want bulkheads or an overflow. most aquariums sold have tempered glass on the bottom glass and the 4 sides are plate good luck on your build

Thanks. Was originally planning to have 1 side with ordinary glass for drilling, but it would be safer to have buttom with tempered glass :)
