The larger male will be on one end all by himself than for so odd reason will swim all the way to the other end just to nip and chase tank mates. .

That is exactly what mine does...at least now i know he's not the only schizo chocolate out there :D

i would not get him a mate that would just make him more aggressive, try separating them by some egg crate/light diffuser for a little while...

you've got a point sarah...i'm gonna make a divider and seperate him from the rest of the tank for a while

Chocos are not bullies and they dont scrape scales. Theyre usually shy and reclusive. However, if hes the biggest in the tank he may act out. Get some fish that are bigger than him. Sounds like he needs a slice of humble pie. Oh, and dont worry, he wont allow the larger fish to bully him. They seem to have an uncanny way of blending into their surroundings and staying out of trouble. The diet shouldnt be so selective. They are like Oscars and will eat ANYTHING. Its a good fish to keep in the community. Very docile.

I would have to say like any other cichlid they can snap for no apparent reason. I had 2 Choclates housed with 3 oscars for over 4 years. Never a fight or anything more than a very mild flaring of fins over the entire time. I got up one morning and went to work. Came home that night to find my Albino Oscar which was easily 2-3 inches larger destroyed and laying in a flower pot. I pulled him out and immediately put him a hospital tank only to lose him the following day.
Not knowing who did it i monitored the tank for the next several days being that i had a long weekend only to see one of the choclates "snap" and vengefully attack my Tiger Oscar, again the Oscar was the 2nd largest fish in the tank only smaller than the one that had been taken out recently.

I never did find out what made him snap.

Most chocolates that i have had were very agressive, towards tank mates but never killed any, i got them because i read they were docile, but i have never had a docile one yet .

Only kept those 2. Never saw that coming especially after 4 years. I would not hesitate to own them again though, what beautiful fish.

HHHHmmmm....he is the largest fish in the tank...
i'm gonna be on the lookout for a larger tankmate that won't cause more chaos
Thanx for all the input guys :)

Good luck on that, Mine are in with larger tank mates(lysoni and veija regani and fenestratus)and he still takes the time to nip scales off of them when ever he feels like it,some just have that personality some dont.
