Temps for Sturgeon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are a couple of species of Sturgeon that are actually not 11 foot fish and could fit in smaller than expected quarters. None however are beginning or intermediate hobby fish and all are very demanding in care.

Sturgeon are a fish that you should NOT be entertaining the idea of keeping unless you are willing to provide a long-term commitment for the fish and are will to throughly research the care requirement for the particular species. Having a question about the validity of a species name or the in ability of IDing it properly is enough in my opinion to tell you not to obtain the fish.

IMHO... asking here is not the type of research you need to be conducting if you care to keep these fish. Forums will not give you the information you will need to properly care for these fish as few are around that truly know anything about the captive care and husbandry of these fish. In all fairness to MFK I say this about all Hobby forums.

Already in this thread a common and rather untrue myth has been stated that is enough for me to say "these people are parrots and have no idea about what they are talking about".

(Not you BTW Teleost :P.... You happened to have posted an important part of sturgeon husbandry that most overlook quickly in their parroting . I do though disagree that they cannot be kept and that in the wrong hands they die slowly....Usually they die either very quick or they die un-expectedly for no real reason...If I was to say they Should not be kept, it would make me a hypocrite, 90% of the fish I keep should not alltogether be kept either on some ethical or moral ground. I'm not a hypocrite so I can not say that no one should be allowed access to these fish. What I do urge however is very careful planning, longterm commitment and detailed research long before you ever think of obtaining such a fish)

Not neccesarily! I was planning on keeping it in the basement. The hottest it ever gets down there in the summer is 68. I was just thinking it would be really cool to keep one in the pond (if/when I make one) with the bass and bowfin. They are neat looking fish and I could get a albino one and brighten up the pond a bit....

What makes you think Temp between 55 and 65 is Max for either of those fish?
For that matter why would it be important?

No my other pond is still there but I want an indoor one now because I really think that my bass and bowfin would love an 8x8 indoor pond. Plus it would be really cool to have a "game fish" pond in the basement (I know bowfin aren't really game fish). I just think it would be better for them. Also no worries guys I won't get a sturgeon then. I just thought it was a cool idea. Oh well thanks. And any other suggestions for it?
