Hey everyone. I'm wanting to know what you guys are doing when changing large volumes of water when the water from the tap is very bad like it is in Phoenix.

What I've been doing is filling a 55 gallon plastic trash can, treating the water and then transferring the water to the tank after that...... My problem is 55 gallons isn't enough for my 240g tank.

So.... how do you change your water on large tanks?

What exactly do you mean by "bad"?

Full of chemicals and it's very hard. Chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, herbicides..... all kinds of stuff is in Phoenix tap water.

I suppose it could be worse, you could be in Flint, MI

well any chances you could give me some advice about how to change my water in large quantities without harming the fish? I would like to do at least 120 gallons at a time.

With the exception of chlorine, I don't see another practical way to remove the other contaminants other than reverse osmosis.

Yep, if for sure you've got all that nastiness in your tap water, RO or other tap water filtration system designed to remove that stuff would be needed.

So for people that dont have that issue..... are you just putting the hose directly into the tank and then treating for chlorine afterwards?

I just googled the Phoenix Water Quality Report.
The only thing I see that looks grossly different than many other cities in the US, is chlorine is slightly higher than some others. The pH and hardness are higher than some cities, lower than others. So to me other than treating for chlorine (as we all must do, that live under municipal water conditions), would be to tailor my stock to the conditions there. Your water is perfect for Central American, and rift lake African species, but I would avoid soft water Amazon and northeast S Americans, or some of the Asian soft water species.
