Does anyone else use anything else besides API liquid tests? I was talking to the guy from my local fish store and we both agreed that near us on Long Island we haven't seen anything else. The occasional water strips. I'm talking about freshwater. Let me know your thoughts.

red sea makes a liquid kit.. I TRIED The nitrate test and was not impressed.. others may have a different experience

I've used others over the years but gone back to API as they seem to be the easiest...I have one now that is probably over ten years old and I'm not sure if it is even any good or not.

yep ,, MY experience is that API works

Lee do you know if they expire at some point?

THEY DO.. I don't know how reliable the use by dates are,, but they are posted on the boxes (of replacement bottles)and on the bottom of the bottles I believe.. my experience is that the nitrate tends to read a little high towards the end of the bottles(I GUESS DUE to all the shaking that is required),, all others seem accurate in my limited experience

I rarely use them, mostly for keeping track of cycling new tanks these days.

ME TOO.. although if I notice HIH starting or other issues (with 6 tanks , stuff sneaks up on me occasionally).. I WILL Start testing most or all of my tanks for a while

Good old regular partial water changes keeps me from bothering with testing and keeps most ailments at bay.

There are electronic tests apparently that are becoming slightly more prevalent but I believe they're still expensive/impractical at the moment for most people.
