Good old regular partial water changes keeps me from bothering with testing and keeps most ailments at bay.

I have mostly the same experience but PHX. WATER SEEMS , and I have been told by a few people is ,inconsistant .. I HAVE MEASURED high NITRITES out of my tap on occasion

There are electronic tests apparently that are becoming slightly more prevalent but I believe they're still expensive/impractical at the moment for most people.

I have seen some of these in stores. they look complicated to run AND expensive

I agree. I pretty religiusly do 50% weekly plus a poop vac in between. If something isn't right, change more water raise the temp and add salt. If that don't fix it add Prazipro. If that don't fix it add bleach and start over.

I barely test, I know it's not the best but I just trust my water changes and the way my water looks and smells. I did have some test kits and I tested all good and used the other extra I had a few months later same thing.

Lot of feedback cool. So it seems most of us use API then.

LOOK and smell can sure help tell if your tank is healthy.. that "EARTHY" smell means a cycled tank most of the time..

I have a friend, who is on MFK as Mr. Pleco I think, that is / was very anal about testing his water. So badly that he would have several test kits and cross test for inconsistencies. I will ask him to get in this thread to tell you about his discoveries on the different brands, how age of kits matters etc. To me it is almost comical the lengths he went to. Of course now he will think I am making fun of him. :woot:
