As for your first set of questions, hmmm.

1) teeth not fused to skull, cartilaginous skeleton, unsegmented epidermal fin rays.
The essay portions would take more time than I have right now but I believe that the #1 reason they were historically successful was that their time had come, haster, more adaptable, better armed, better senses, and active, well formed young meant none of the predators that shared their early environment were much competion.
