I think I know what fish you are talking about.
We get them at the store I work at and they are called "Counterfeit Silver Dollars". The wholesaler cant provide a proper name either but they sound exactly like what you are looking at.
I have a trio in a 125 and they are about 3 inches long, look like a washed out Black Skirt Tetra , only more of a smokey or faded effect then bars and they have a nice red eye .
We sell them as an alternative to Silver Dollars for folks with smaller tanks who want a Silver Dollar type fish.
I think I'm gonna have to check into the big book and see if I cant find them and get their real name.

Sounds like the fish! They are labeled on the tank as Siver Dollars. The girl working there didn't know what they where other than they came in as silver dollars.

Thanks for the links! It is Gymnocorymbus thayeri. The ones I saw have a bit more red in the eye than the one in the picture.
