Hey, I was just wondering since I've decorated my Columbian Rainbow Boa's tank with live ferns and spiderplants in a jungle sort of way, whether it would be possible to put 2 or 3 Neon Tetras or Cardinals in the water bowl? I'm not talking a little dish, the thing holds about 3-4 gallons (big rubbermaid food container for a soaking area). It sounds odd but the snake hides most of the day under the plants and I thought it would be nice to see some life in the tank even when she's asleep.

Will the snake bother them?
Will they bother the snake?
Any issues with hygiene?

Thanks,
Paul

As long as the bowl is big enough and is filtered, the fish will be fine. The snake won't bother them and they shouldn't bother the snake.

I would get more then 2-3 because they are schooling fish.

Does your snake defecate in his bowl? If not, I think it would be OK. An air-driven sponge filter is cheap and easy, and will help keep humidity up in the tank. Guppies might be a better choice than tetras, as they're a bit hardier.

Just thought it would be a cool idea, since it's sort of a rainforest setup, and running water from the filter would provide some boost to humidity and a nice feature. If 2-3 is too few, how many can i manage in a 3-4G tub?

Thanks,
Paul

As mentioned, fancy guppies could be a good alternative. They don't need to be in schools and come in an array of colors.

Just saw your post Noto,
My snake usually doesn't, although if it did that would be a pretty big worry for the fish I'd imagine. Guppies are nice but I just dont find them as appealing as tetras. I might give them a try though, if I decide to give this a go.

We will defenatly need to see some pictures of that ;)

you could put a few if you had real good filtration.

at one point i had 50 or so smaller tetras in a 10 gallon tank, and they thrived. so you could maybe squeeze in 7 or 8 maybe 10 depending on the dimensions

i dont think it would be worth it. it wouldnt look that good. and u wud have to change the water almost everyday correct? that would be a pain to get those tetras out and it wud get kinda nasty too. u cud mabey put in rosies or somethin like that. thats what i do for my CWD but he eats them. ur boa wouldnt even waste his time on tetras. u wud need an airpump also or else the tetras would suffacate eventually. and the water could overheat
