Can you guys ID this fish for me? I keyed it out and it appears to be a yellow bullhead but I've never seen freckled bullheads. Is that something they have for a short time? Yesterday I was thinking it was a lost freckled madtom with the first picture but they've never been found in this river basin. Today I took a picture with the fish suspended in water and the adipose fin is clearly separated from the caudal fin. Other than the freckles and adipose fin, the two have nearly identical traits.

Thanks for any input.

most likely to be black bullhead as they are the main fish for stocking public ponds in Texas!

Not a black bullhead. They can be distinguished from the yellow by having black barbels on lower jaw and having fewer anal fin rays (<24) compared to the yellow bullhead with light barbels on the lower jaw and more than 24 anal fin rays. This fish has more than 24 fin rays, I think I got 26 when I counted.

Black bullhead for sure. I had 2 I caught by hand at that size.

I looked back at the book and it is a yellow bullhead. Very similar but different enough. I've just never seen one with the little spots.

Yea, sure is I didnt notice the light barbells. Good catch.
