Hi there, i will say its a carpintis, and i will dare to be more specific, its an Herichthys teporatus, greetings

Welcome Mr. Arroyo. :D

Perhaps you could help me, as well as other folks on the site better understand your conclusion?

I found a thread on Atlaz Dr. Pez (see poorly translated version: http://translate.google.com/transla...firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&sa=G ) in which you explain the differences between cyanoguttatus and carpintis but I was confused by the photos you linked to which seemed to contradict your explination.

Which you label "carpintis" the fish appears to have considerable points, not spots, but the base color is as you describe for the species.

which you label "cyanogutattus" are considerably more "spotted" and the spots are un-uniform in shape compared to the previous fish. Unfortunately the base color of the fish is not easily seen.

Not discounting your first-hand experiences with both species and time in the field with them I would like to better understand what in fact makes a carpintis a carpintis and a cyano a cyano :) . Is it indeed only location? If so, how would one tell tankbred fish without a capture location?
Thank you very much.

You ever come up to the Valley?

Hi there to all, thanks for your interst straitjacketstar, i will try to clarify and explain what are the main differences between Herichthys cyanoguttatus and carpintis.

Herichthys cyanogutattus

In the actual time, there has been a lot of confusion between this two species, in fact some peopleo use to call the cyanogutattus as Texas cichlids and the carpintis as green Texas, one of the main characterist that Herichthys cyanogutattus presents is the points along its body, that goes from white pearl, gold and even blue, the points cames always align like a sheet of a notebook, meanwhile Herichthys carpintis presents irregular and aleathory dots in blue turquoise.(fotos)

Other difference its the geographical distribution, Herichthys cyanogutattus goes from the south of the estate of Texas in the USA, to the river name conchos in the division of states of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas in Mexico.

From this river “conchos” and driving south in the same highway just 5 kilometers away we found the river call Magueyes and that’s where Herichthys teporatus appears, and leaving Herichthys carpintis to a more southern distribution like the Laguna del Carpintero in Tampico, Tamaulipas. By the way theres a morphometric difference between teporatus and carpintis, that presumes that they are different species.

Hi there, here goes the photo of an herichthys cyanoguttatus, observe the aligment of the points in its body, greetings

Hi, Aquamojo, thanks for your kind words, now theres a great interes in Mexico to understand better the gender Herichthys, Mauricio de la Maza and Juan Miguel Artigas, are doing some search about it, and one of the most interesting thing is the fact that they are 2 species of carpintis, one name teporatus, or carpintis teporatus, and the other one it will be carpintis carpintis, Mauricio have made a lot of mesuarmente on parathypes fish and he realize that this fish are different species, now with the years it will be a responsability for us in the hobby to know what kind of "carpintis" we have or where does it comes from, greetings
