Hey- Big Question

I as we all know am cycling my tanks (Long story short? Travel took me away, my daughter's getting a 10g for her bday, "Hooked" me again). I am cycling a 45 Show (Mbuna) a 20L (Grow out) and a 125. I was going all Old World and got snaked in by my love for the Texas. I want to know some feedback on some things,

1) I want 2 get a pair, but how do I get them? I would think not to buy them from 1 LFS only (3??) Would they not all most likly be from the same fry?

2) Can I Mix the Breeds? (Carpinte v Cyanoguttatus) (I would think not, but at such a small size, how to really tell? )

3) Is there such a thing as a "Red Texas??"

4) If I was to use my 125 as a community CA/SA tank what would work best with the Texas?? (Green Terror, Dempseys, Oscars, Salvini's, Cons, Red Devil...etc....I want to stay away from the sevrums, and the less aggresives (Firemouths)) (FYI: Just a list, not all the fish I am going to add to a 125.... Grin )

5) What order should they be purchased??

6) What kind of Cats would work, I am a Old World guy & love the Botia, but they would be in my estimation way to small for a CA/SA Tank.

7) What are the best dithers for the Texas??

I know that is a lot to start with, but........

You guys have been Mucho Helpfull with my setup ??'s so far..

Thank you in advance for any/all help you can give me on the subject!

:D

Hi,
Texas cichlids are certainly one of my favourites, colourful and playful and AGGRESSIVE.

if you have a breeding pair of texas cichlids in a 125 nothing is going to survive when they spawn, they are experts at exterminating tank mates.

it is best to raise 4 - 6 and let them pair off and remove the others, they are usually sold on quite easily.

a single texas can form part of a community with suitable tank mates, such as convicts, salvini, jack dempseys.

I let the parents raise the fry until they lose interest and then i move some fry into a community tank and grow them on until they reach 2" and then i sell them on to a lfs.
They spawn at a small size and are capable of doing a fair amount of damage to tank mates.
there is a red texas which is a hybrid as far as i know and it is expensive. I dont know wether off spring are fertile from red texas spawnings..

Thanks! I have found out that a Red Texas is a Hybrid of a Red Parrot and a Texas, I am not into hybrids. I am concerned with intr family breeding if I get the 4-6 from the same LFS. I am going to try a bunch of others..........

You might take a look at the escondido variety. I don't think these are hybrid's and they have really large spots as opposed to regular texas. Jeff Rapps has some for sale on tangledupincihlids web site. $5.50 is cheap but the shipping is not. I have heard and seen pictures of fish people got from him (superior quality). I am going to get some but I have too many fish as it is lol. You may try raphael cats as tankmates but as ng80 said spawning texas are vicious. These cats only come out at night but are good cleaners. Take them out if the texas spawn to keep the eggs and babies safe. In a community I would stay away from the Red Devil, Midas, Flowerhorn, and the parachromis sp. Because they can be to aggressive most of the time. Good luck and you will not regret having a ca/sa tank!

There really isn't anything wrong with hybrids if you like the look of them. And they are not crossed with different family of fish since both are from the family cichlidae.
EvilYardGnome-

Help me understand....

I have been a "Fishead" for about 25 years, I was always told that Hybrids are bad for the hobby, and the Fish in general have had health problems.

Im not being snotty by saying this but help me maybe understand a new way of thinking, I am open minded and want to learn as much as possible every day.

I have a great example. I ended up with a male texas and female red terror. they were in the same 55 with a divider til I saw them getting along and lifted it. Came home from work one day to a bunch of eggs. Only fish to make it through Katrina. Look almost like a banded devil.
1st is result, other two are of the terror and texas. Sometime the reds come out too.

Taz My Brother-

Those are some kick azz looking fish, Maybe I should open my mind, and think a little more about the Hybrid Factor. I Glad they (and you) made it through the storm, did the Parents survive? Do they still spawn?? Do you have any more Images??

:WHOA: Dammn! Sweet Looking Fish......

Hey Taz. Sweet looking fish. I just bought two terrors that look like your and have just about concluded that I have mayan's (aka false red terrors). I was mad at first but then decided I really like the fish anyway as they stay much smaller than actual festae and far less aggresive. Has anyone else done this and does anyone else think those might be mayans because I would like to Know the true ID of my fish and don't have batteries for my camera. Nice fish none the less. Love the Hybrid too. Sorry to derail nuth88.
