I am so bad a ID-ing cichlids.....is this a carptinis or a texas? I think it's a male....about 10 inches. It's a possible adoption. Thanks in advance.

Herichthys Carpintis is known as a Green Texas. Herichthys Cyanoguttatus is known as just the regular Texas cichlid. The pic above looks like cyanoguttatus to me.

Autocorrect will get you every time =P and they are very similar as stated about.

Man that is a tough I.D. I'm leaning towards H. Cyanoguttatus but it looks almost like it has some H. Carpintis in there though. Here is my male H. Cyanoguttatus for reference. Notice the shape of the markings around the face, that is usually the way to determine between these species.

I believe yours is cyanoguttatus.
And cyanoguttatus and carpintus are not the same, although they are close cousins, and both in the Herichthys genus/carpintus complex, cyanoguttuas is found in Texas, carpintus is from further south in Mexico, carpintus are not from Texas.
Here is carpintus.

There is also another close cousin, Herichthys tamasopoensus, found even more south, in the Rio Tamasop. There are a bunch of similar species from North America, deppii an minckleyi are also very similar.
