Can anyone identify the fish in the picture, I am confused as to whether this is Herichthys Cynoguttatus (Texas cichlid) or H. Carpinte ("Super Green" Texas cichlid).

Thank you.

Hard to tell, especially when their in that breeding dress. But If i where to guess it would be H.Carpintis based on the blotches and prominent white. A lot of times Cyno’s get that off white in breeding.

But, I am no expert

Do all Texas cichlids, regardless of color morph, change to the black and white breeding dress or do only the regular Cynos?

Just like duanes duanes said, most Herichthyines get that white and black breeding dress. I’ve personally noticed that most cyno’s white is abit more dull, where as Carpintis get real strong whites.

But that’s just my personal observation, that doesn’t mean ALL of them are like that. Down here where I’m at your more likely to find Carpintis then cyanoguttatus I don’t know why.

Carpintis, I never understood blue Texas as cyanoguttatus and green Texas as Carpintis, I think those silly common names are reversed.....

The problem is using a common name in the first place. People interchange the same name for two different species.
How did caprintis get called a "Texas" in the first place? I mean they aren't found there. I can understand why cyano is, because they are native to Texas.

I imagine the same reason red devils and midas cichlids were called the same thing, at the time they didn't realize it was two separate species.
