Can anyone identify this fish ? Im pretty sure it’s a common Texas cichlid, but with all the different types, hybrids, carpintis...etc , I would like a sold identification if possible
Thanks

Tbh you would actually have to know exactly where it came from. Where was it collected area. It does look like a true Texas but can't be sure without knowing the source.
Oh ok, it came from Petsmart if that helps, but that’s all I know

Yes Petsmart probably get them from a fish farm where they may be mixed in with other Cichlid types. Like I stated earlier possibly pure but without knowing where it was collected from and who actually bred the Texas it may be a hybrid.

Did you by any chance ask if anyone may have brung the Texas in?
I highly doubt it was brought in, I’ve had it for 6 months, it was under an inch when I got him and there were about 20 in the tank with a picture label on the tank. I just waited for him to get some size before trying to identify him. But no, I didn’t think to ask

Looks like a female, but as to what species of Herichthys, can't tell.
Tom didn't mean what store, he meant what catch locality (if wild) or if not wild, what ancestry.
The genus Herichthys is not bunch of Texas cichlids, only cyanoguttatus is a Texas cichlid, the others aren't from Texas at a all, so applying the name Texas cichlid to them, is problematic, and has been for a long time.
This is Herichthys carpintus (below), it does not come from Texas.

Below is Herichthys tamasopoensus, it also does not come from Texas

Do they look the same to you ? maybe.... do they look like yours? Can you tell one species from the other?
This is why provenance and using correct terminology if breeding or catching and providing location for them is important, and why you can never know what yours is, without these facts. Unless you get DNA tested.
Without those answers it is an aquarium strain Herichthys (maybe) mutt.

I’m sure it’s a male only because it spawned a few times with my female sajica. I mentioned what store I got it from because it’s all I know about him. Mine looks similar to the two pics but I see some definite deference’s. Thanks for the good info. Sounds like I’ll never really know for sure.

You are correct, you will never really know for sure.

Unless you plan to breed him and distribute the fry I wouldn’t really worry about what he is technically. If you like him that’s all that really matters.
