You are correct, you will never really know for sure.

Unless you plan to breed him and distribute the fry I wouldn’t really worry about what he is technically. If you like him that’s all that really matters.
I’m not gonna breed him or anything, just all the discussions I read about these and the different types peaked my curiosity when I got him, so I waited until he got bigger to see if he was identifiable. No biggie, I like him ( becoming one of my favorites) and like you said, that’s all that really matters.

How big is he? He still looks fairly small? I bet his spangles really pop in person!! (I like him too :-)
 
Ask the folks at Petsmart, quite possibly from a vendor such as Segrest Farms. They sell both H. carpintis as well as H cyanoguttatus, as well as red texas hybrids.
