185A519C-843A-49BA-A31B-A2B278E1F8F7.jpeg I’ve got a cycled 55 gal and I’m ready to try North American natives for the first time. My plan is to put a bullhead and a few different types of Sunfish in it. I’m going for maximum variety of colors, body types and behaviors. So although I suspect it’s a bad idea, does anyone have any experience putting a Texas Cichlid in with Sunfish. It would sure make for an awesome looking tank.

Logic dictates that, Yes, Sunfish could be sucessfully kept with Texas Cichlids. Many varieties of both species live together in the wild.
I keep an adult Red Texas Cichlid with Firemouths, various schools of large Tetras, and Loaches, with no problems.
A 55 gal. Will probably be okay temporarily for your planned fish community, as long as they are juveniles. All proposed fish have the potential of growing to nearly 12".
Your tank is looking good and should make a nice display.

I will have to upgrade to really have what I want. But What I’m planning right now is, bullhead, Longear, Warmouth, Orange Spotted, Yellow Perch, Texas Cichlid. I plan to purchase all of them as juveniles. Any suggestions positive or negative about this proposed lineup are welcome as I plan on starting to add fish in the next few days. Also any suggestion as to the order that they should be added (least aggressive to most?) would also be welcome. At this point the only things I’m completely dead set on is having a bullhead and some type of Sunfish in there.

I only encounter Warmouths / Rock Bass / Goggle eyes in cooler fast moving creeks and rivers in my area. They likely will need similar conditions in an aquarium.

They do fine in both aquaria (standard). And in ponds and lakes.

Add the orangespotted and rock bass first as they are the least aggressive.

I actually ended up getting a Herichthys carpinte the so called “Green Texas”. My final line up ended up being a Longear, Warmouth, and Pumpkinseed Sunfish, along with a Yellow Perch, Southern Brown Bullhead Catfish and the Green Texas Cichlid (and a Danio that I absolutely cannot catch and get out of the tank). I’m already scanning Craigslist for a good deal on a much bigger tank. I’ll keep you posted on the success or challenges of this particular mix. I’m including a few pictures, but for the most part the fish aren’t cooperating with my photographic efforts.
