What is the difference between Carpintis and Herichthys cyanoguttatus

I thought that Carpintis was a texas cichlid. Now I'm confused

Carpintis are ALOT more green and the spots are much larger on the carpintis. Carpintis grow smaller around 9 inches and cyanoguttatus can reach 12 inches. Both IMO equally aggressive, but the carpintis might be a little more. There are two races of Carpintis as well, Escondido most common to find and Rio Tamuin harder to find. Rio Tamuin are more blue than green.
Carpintis are commonly sold as green texas when really they aren't a texas at all. Any other info you need just ask.

Rio Salto is another geographical morph.

Common names like "Texas Cichlid" can refer to two different species. Carpinte and cyanoguttatum. The carpinte are more commonly called "Blue Texas Cichlid", found mostly in Mexico and cyanoguttatum are called "True Texas Cichlids" or just plain "Texas Cichlids". They are actually found in TX, but more in Mexico.

The use of the name "Texas cichlid" leaves you wide open to which species of two you are referring to. This is why scientific names will always prevail over common names.

I have a ton of experience in keeping both types.....but the science of it, both of these guys have it down!!

Cyanos are not picky breeders. They are the backbone of a lot of hybrids out there... mostly accidental. The two cichlids have slightly different body structures as well. Carpintis have some worm-like spangling on the gill plate and jaw region, unlike cyanos. Also the base colors are different (behind the pearling). Both are great fish, I just wish I could find a carpintis. Cyanos are at every LFS.

so how would I sex a carpintis at around 3 inches? That is the size of fish being sold at my favorite LFS

Thanks

females have the black blotch in the doral fin. Now I am wondering if I have the escondido strain or the Rio Tamuins one because mine are more blue than turquiose....

Where did you buy them from? Unless you got them from a store that either orders from specialty breeders/importers or you have people in your area that bring fish in from those sources, then you probably have south east asia bred fish that could come from anywhere. And there are more than just 2 regional morphs for carpintis. Same for cyanogutattus.

BC, over here in North America, the carpintis is the Green Texas cichlid.
