texas holey rock or slate?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Holey rock; for it's pH buffering ability. Your rift lake cichlids require a stable high pH and holey rock is your best bet to attain and maintain proper pH.

BTW, I also mix aragonite into my gravel since aragonite dissolves faster to adjust pH after water changes. I just replenish the aragonite every 2 years.

id use the holey rock, but you need some smaller pieces to mix in with those huge chunks- like mike said, you will need alot of hiding spots..

I holey rock really exspensive?

It can be. Depends on where you look and how patient you are. You can find great deals for it on E-bay if you are patient enough to wait out the other people who want it.

it was too expensive for my taste lol. unless you live in texas and can get it dirt cheap. i wanted to use a bunch of it, but it was cheaper to get white tufa (which is really light, and stacks great!) instead.. tufa also comes in red, but i liked the off white best.

Oh! if you check where you live, you may find a landscaping/rock yard! i got about 200 lbs of river rock for my africans for about 26 bucks.. they have different varieties of rock too.. i would check that out too..

Construction supply outlets usually carry bulk limestone (same rock/no holes) at much lower prices than found in the aquarium trade. A masonry bit, cordless driver, and water hose are all that's needed to make your own custom holes.

thank you all for the advice

personally im a big fan of the holey rock...

I wouldnt use limestone only b/c it can tend to cut up the fish (or in my experience anywho). I like the holy rock but I wouldnt suggest it b/c they will probably out grow it. If you really want the best of both worlds, why not use both? I do like holy rock but I think the slate looks really nice also and holy rock can get expensive.

yeah I was looking at holey rock. This stuff is SUPER pricey!!!!
