Bigriver...I dont know how big yours are, but the pics I posted above are about 1 month old and they were about 2 inches. Heres some I just took for this thread of some of those posted above. They are now about 3 inches and were purchased from a reputable vendor as cyanos. I specifically wanted cyanos and for months, all he could offer was carpintis, which I have had 3 variants of and didnt want this time. Cyanos are hard to come by around here.

Dont mind the cloudy water. I just finished my weekly water change.

Sorry for the crappy pics. I dont have my work camera home and had to use my phone.

Tough one bigriver, they appear to be cyanno's, but spots are quite large.
Here are some pics of H. cyanoguttatus "Cuatro Cienegas", you'll see the spots are very small.

Your fish is a lovely specimen, time will tell which it is as Carpinte will generally only grow to 10"max but Cyanno's to 12"

There also could be a small chance that you have a Carpinte/Cyanno cross

spangles do look big for a cyano, but im betting thats what it is. or a hybrid perhaps.

btw ^^ escondido is not a species, its a collection point if i am not mistaking. an escondido is a carpinte.
I know :) Herychthis Carapintis 'Escondido' is what i referred to, what i think it is.

But i'm leaning more towards a mix, because of the colors. Also if it was a pure escondido, it should have larger worming around it's mouth, and i just can't see it being 'vontehillo' or any of the other carapinte variants.

i see where you guys are saying the spotting is a bit big but this guy looks exactly like my cyanos and i have them from the same source as VRWC, the spots are a little big but i think dont look ANYTHING like a carptintis at all, in a carpintis the spots would be more elongated and worming and all the spots on this fish are perfectly rounded and separated except for right at the face, and the colors as well point to cyano as any of the carpinte variants would be more blue than this (except for maybe the chariel but this doesnt look like a chariel either and i think a chariel would be a bit more blue anyways)

its def not an escondido if you look at the pic posted as escon the spots on the body are all elongated and worming all over while the OPs fish has all totally round spots

You may be right Sarah, but it definatly still does not look anything like a Texas to me. Does not look like the pure cyano's i've seen, anyway.

Either way, it's a nice fish :)

hmmm, after seeing your pics jimmy, mine sure doesnt look 100% cyano, although when they were about an inch, they looked like yours.

Unless mine and yours is some form of variant other than jimmys, bigriver, im gonna side with them saying ours are possibly a hybrid.:swear:

Youd think we could get a frickin full blooded cichlid from within our own country with ease!!

Im leaning more towards Cyanno, but then theres the question of purity. Without knowing the origins of fish or catch locations, we're just guessing.

Like i said, time will tell. I couldnt say 100% either way so im afraid im no help. :(
