Texas or Green Terror?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i agree texas, I have had nothing but problems with a femalte gt since i got her. Goes on these huge month long hunger strikes then eats for a week and does it again.
Ive had it for a year and its barely grown

i would go with GT. but 60 gallon going to be pushing it with just a gt or texas with nothing else in the tank.

Far as ability to do either, I think one of either the texas or GT would be worth a shot with your bichers. I have a 4" bicher in my 125 with a GT, a texas, a midas and a few others and he does fine. They don't mess with him. I have seen several tanks with Gt's or other CA/SA cichlids and bichers. It's pretty commons. But each fish will be different. How big are the bichers? I would just make sure you get a gt or texas that is a bit smaller than the bicher's at first to grow up together. I think a 60 gallon would be big enough for a pair of cichlids but if they did breed I would then worry about your bichers getting beaten. Even with just a single cichlid and bichers give the bichers plenty of places to hide that only they could squeeze into that way they'll at least have somewhere to retreat. I think you have plenty of info to make a wise decision on if this will work or at least if it is worth a shot. Far as which cichlid to pick, you gotta go with what you like best. Either way you will get an awesome fish! Texas and Gt's are both in my top 10 favorites. I would just recommend trying to get a male of either one, especially a male GT if you go that route. Good luck!

I have never had a Texas but from reading around here I have gotten the impression that they are more aggressive then the GTs.

I've been keeping GTs for awhile now, one of my all time favorite fish, all the ones I have had have been in a community type setup and have had great color with little attitude.

my bichirs are about 8in and 5in.. no matter what i get i was planning to get them small at around 3.5in.. my LSF has both for $7 each at that size.. thats why i couldnt pick.. i had a GT before but i gave him away cuz i didnt really want him cuz i got him for free.. now im regreting it lol.. well ill be htinking about what ima get..

thanks everyone!

WOW! $7 is cheap for a 3.5" texas or Gt. That's a good deal! I would agree on the aggression of gt's vs. texas. My experience so far has been seeing Texas a bit more aggressive than GT's. However, I have what I believe is a little 4" female GT who is a spit fire. She tries to throw down with my 6" male salvini. She's cute! Good luck in your decision! Let us know! Post pics if ya can!

Texas would probably be a better choice since they tend to be smaller than the GT.
Texas grow faster than the GT tho.

Strange...
My male did the same thing too.:screwy:
I got him @ around 6"-7" & he live to about 12"TL.
He would go on fasts every few months.
He'd get nice & thick/chubby, & all of the sudden not eat for like a month.:WHOA:
He was an awesome fish with other tank mates, but his appetite was something I hated to deal with.
I got a few small GT's to replace him, but they were acting like this too, the would mouth the food then spit it out.
I no longer keep GT's. :( Those hunger strikes were far too stressful for me.

Just get both and then see. Not so hard to do.

Get both at 3.5". Grow out, decide what you like more. Sell the other and make a couple bucks in the process.

Haha that was another thing I was thinking lol I think I might do that xP

Thanks everyone! I'll post pix as soon as I get them:) maybe this weekend when I'm off
