Here's a Herichthys Carpintis "sp. Rio Tamuin" from Jeff Rapps.

I traded it along with a couple other cichlids to make room for the Dovii.

It looks really nice, but I dont see much of a difference from Escondido.

thefishguy7-has the nicest and biggest tex I've ever seen-its an official-MONSTER!

I think the purpose of the thread was to see Carpintis, which has many variants due to location. Some of the beautiful fish shared in the previous posts are hybrids. thefishguy7 does have a very impressive tex as well, but I believe its a cyano X carpintis, also a hybrid, not a natural variant.
I love hybrids, but they belong in a different forum.

this is true-my bad

Ok guys, how do you tell the difference? I have heard so much about telling the difference between the two, my little guy looks extremely similar to the first pics, so i'm assuming its an escondido? I was told it is not that likely though as i live in australia and they are a little rarer than the green texas but he has the same body shape, fin shape and wormy markings on the face.. also he is highly aggressive for such a small fish, so far only being beaten up by my dovii which is the same size.. does anyone have a couple of pics of juveniles of both for comparison?

Well they are the same species after all. I think Escondido's have larger and more defined pearls on the face and body than Rio Tamuin. I remember on a few occasions being envious of the nice pearls on other people's Escondido thinking I should have got one of those instead.

Regular ol' H. carpintis

This one is female i believe at 4" TL. Pretty calm in my tank, not too aggresive though i've had a male a while back that was pretty brutal.
Try reading this http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=358 and look around the site. A lot of info there.

It was a male? There is a lot of black in the dorsal.

It is definitely very cool. Why did you sell it?

both festae and carpinte regardless of sex get dark dorsal fins.
it was a male!

i sold it cause i wanted to expand my collection into veija's and other rare cichlids.
i wanted my barred midas to become more aggressive aswell.
the CXF was in the way of that haha.
he was so aggressive.

Wow, I read that article. Sounds like there are way too many locations that house Carpinits, making slight, if any at all, differences in apearance. I guess just pick the ones that you think looks best.
