I would also suggest, if you really want to breed cichlids, is to get 5 or 6 young ones and let them grow up together, and choose their own mates. Just because you have a male and a female, doesn't mean they will become a compatible pair. Cichlids can be very selective about whom they wish to breed with, and for one of the un-chosen, it is usually fatal.
Also, just because they seem compatible one minute, doesn't mean they will be compatible the next. One must always have a plan B, just in case things become estranged.
